Rather than consult people based on technical knowledge, which you'd do for a debate or sumshit, asking as many people as possible (on and off the internet) for an opinion is probably a good way to get help with that.
Except that asking the layman for input will only get you so far. Like Rin said, asking people in person for an opinion often nets you a watered-down version of the input an artist really needs. And if the person you're asking doesn't have a clue about the subject at hand then you won't get very good feedback either.
People who have experience in what you're working on will have much better and more informative things to say about your work than asking just anyone.

Nope. Talent isn't required. Take a look at some of my oldest sprites. No talent at all. Some of my earliest writing-little to no talent.
You make it sound like you're the cream of the crop.

Talent IS needed actually. If person X has talent and person Y don't and if both train to improve who do you think will have a better outcome? Of course person Y can still make awesome stuff but the stuff person X does, if the same amount of effort is put in it, will always better.

Talent is more of a head start IMO. After a while effort and experience start to count more and more.

True, but every little bit helps. I'm not very good at drawing by traditional means as of yet, but when Magix shows me some of his art, I can still generally point out things I see that are weird or wrong. I guess maybe I have some talent? Or just an instinct for what some things should look like: are they the same thing?

I'm better than I was. Hopefully by a respectable amount, but I don't try to pretend to be any cream of any crop.

But if talent IS needed, why can person Y still make awesome stuff? Just because it isn't AS awesome as person X's doesn't mean it isn't good.

Ok, so I ain't got time for no arguin, so I'm not gonna respond any more. Gotta get that homework done pronto

This totally reminds me of a conversation we shared a while ago and Mew said "you don't have to be a chef to know food tastes bad".

I personally think talent is just a booster step to get to paths. For example, my sightreading abilities help me get to understand a piece of music faster than some of my friends (when reading sheet music, of course).

I'm definitely not an expert on plots, but I do know enough to have preferences. Which is good enough.

As Rin stated, improving art is the way to go for now. Maybe stick to pencil & paper sketch practice for a bit before moving onto the digi world... i don't know. It's been working for me so far.

Thank you guys and girls (: Sorry for replying so late I was at college. Now that I think about it I better wait till I get a bit better before I try to enter any talent searches for Yen Press.

I wish you the best of luck on your journey of learning, Pinky. We of Klokreations, defenders of all that is internet, shall aid you in your quest.

I chose Klok and Magix, because they have alot of experience with manga. Not because they have a slip of paper called a degree. Manga plots aren't typically much like writing in a book, and people who've read a good bit of it normally has more of an "education" based around manga.

Talent is necessary, whether its obtained through hard work and diligence, or you just naturally have it. Getting asked to work cheaply or for free on some internet persons fangame is nothing like getting a job with a major company such as Yen Press. This factor of talent is a MUST in any creative field, where you have to compete against thousands, if not millions of people. Getting a job in there is nothing like interviewing to be a secretary somewhere or a cashier at McDonalds. It is fierce, bloodthirsty, and cut throat. They will chew people up and spit them out like useless garbage, and the worst part is.. Most people just don't cut the budget.

And to anyone who thinks that if you DO get the job, you'll be living in luxury. Well, you're wrong. Horribly wrong. If you're working on commission, you don't get paid a thing until you finish something and it sells. And you only get a portion of it, and not even a big one. And it's unlikely you'll be making a masterpiece that EVERYONE wants. More then likely, it won't sell as much as you needed it to, and you'll have to hurry up on another new one as soon as possible to pay for the bills piling up. Not only that, but just cause you have the job doesn't mean a thing. They may say "No, we don't like this. Go do something else." Which means you've wasted months and you'll have to waste even more for another, while the bills get ever higher. You may not even get a choice of what you'll draw. You may be told what you work on. And they can always replace you at anytime. If you're working on salary, it's the same thing, except you get paid weekly or monthly. You have to spend almost all of your waking time working on your projects. You still have constant stress, and what if your work sells really well? You don't any extra cash in your salary. And the worst part is, unless you're working on commission and make a killer amazing piece of work, you will barely be managing to get a decent income. Most artists are married to people who make good money, cause they wouldn't be able to afford it otherwise.People think artists and teachers get paid very well, but they don't. There's more artists then jobs available, and reading comic books and manga and graphic novels is becoming an extinct pasttime and most people will often times mock you in some way for it. It's a minority hobby that's dieing out.

I think it would have been easier to just say "Good luck but I think you're wasting your time." That's kind of your message it seems =/

People think artists and teachers get paid very well
I don't think I've ever met anyone who has thought this.

Thank you. However now I'm too scared to even try now so I'll just try to publish my mangas myself instead of working with Yen Press. I don't want them forcing me to change things I really don't want to change.

Pinky, do you by any chance have an art professor of some kind at your college? It might be a long shot, but perhaps they could give you IRL feedback that would be actually helpful. I don't know, since I'm not in college, but meh.

This is a reality of the artistic field tho, generally people aren't going to pay you for what YOU want, they're paying for what they want. I think Rin is giving art careers a very poor rap though...what a lot of people to do is go into teaching, or another full-time job to supplement what they really care about. And that's what it is all about: it being what you care about. It doesn't matter if the money is poor, if it's what you want to do, do it, because if you're happy you can make it work.

That's all there is to it, at least from my point of view.

Oh: yeah what ML said. Teachers are pretty good at being helpful and positive for you

Hey guys and girls sorry for if this is a necro post but I have been extremely busy lately. The bad news is I won't be posting any more of the Mystic Knights manga because I cahnged the story but I want to keep this topic open for any other mangas I might post. The good news is I decided to publish my Mystic Knights manga through Amazon.com and if I can't Yen Press is my second opition for publishing. Don't worry I got better at drawing anime and manga since these were posted. Thank you all for your opinions and support Smile
