Legend of the Dragon
Okay, so this may not have a great non-8-bit-sounding plotline or awesome new mechanics or even a non-RTP style of sound and sight. At first it was just me messing around with RMVXAce--and I honestly wanted to get it out quickly because I'm not too fond of pirating, so I'm trying to work with the free trial. And maybe that shows. But while this 5-hour-long mini-RPG may not be great, it's my hope that it's at least good.
But hey, it's the first Ace game on this site that goes all the way to the final dungeon! Interestingly, this will also be my first totally public game. So, please enjoy!

Sooo, screenies!

Download link!
Link.
(You need the RTP to play this, but the game is only like 6-7 MB. If someone really wants it but doesn't want to download the RTP, I'll see if I can include the parts I used.)

Known Issues!
None so far! But if you find something, please report it, and I'll make a patch somewhere down the line.

Credits!
Everything's from the RTP, duh. I like trying to make games with just the RTP. But expressions exist thanks to Division Heaven, and a number of scripts are by Yanfly, plus modern algebra's quest journal. And Klokinator made the title. And... Well, there's an ingame credits list, just see that!

Sure, it's not XE, but maybe it'll give you something to do for a day or two. Enjoy!

I'll take a look at this and see how in-depth you went with what you can do in Ace.

I've been looking around in there and I've seen tons. Nowhere near enough to fully experience it in the free trial (or you'd be cramming for time horribly)

EDIT: Just tried it out, and I'll admit it entertained me. It was definitely funny at parts. Except I get the feeling that it must be tied to Hyrule. c:

I love this wacky self deprecating humor haha! I'll give you a detailed review later on. Also the mapping is pretty good. Usually the mapping is the worst part of a rushed game like this, but your mapping is pretty good.

Edit: This kid is annoying. Took me like 40 seconds to get past him because he wouldn't move. Please don't block off 1-tile passages with people that just wander around >.>

Well, I'm glad to see people are enjoying it Very Happy

@Jesse: Really? I often find it lacking certain features I want, some of which were present in the 16-bit makers. But hey, cramming for time is something I need to do. I'm tired of having people extend deadlines for me, so here's my practice at that <_<"

As for it being related to Hyrle...How? I don't remember even putting any Zelda references in.

@Klok: Self-deprecating humor? I don't remember putting any of that in xP
And yeah, I tried not to make the maps look bad, but I admit some parts are better than others.

As for the annoying kid, duly noted--I'll make sure he doesn't get in your way! But if you think he's bad, wait 'til you get to the main hub town; There's this elf guy there that I swear will do anything he can to stand in your path <_<

Herp I don't proofread item text, thanks for the catch on the blue slimeball!

I'm really enjoying the game so far. The enemies are really balanced (A bit easy if nothing else) and the actual dialogue is pretty good. The game knows it's a game which is why it's funny, it has actual quality work put into it and yet doesn't fail to break the fourth wall. It's a game that should be a shining example for other RTP first projects.

Even I couldn't top this >.>

Wait what.

I... I knew I was bad at RPGs, but... They say that if you're making a game and it's the perfect difficulty for you, it's probably too hard. But I personally found this game hard <_<

Buttt I bet that's partly because I knew where I was going, so I didn't wander around and get experience from those enemies? Where are you in the game?

But gee, thanks ^-^;

I'm in the ice dungeon currently, nobody has posed any threats yet. Potions are plentiful and my paladin chick can heal any wounds for nearly no mana cost. Oh, and if she runs out of mana I have assloads of mana potions. I really have not grinded a single bit and I have the best armor/weapons available at this point in the game, tons of potions/MP potions, and over 1,000 gold left over.

Yeah, pretty easy so far. Event that first spider boss was beaten without any health potions xD

All right, in that case!

HEY EVERYONE! Be sure to tell me what level you are at each of the bosses! I definitely need to slow down exp rates, but I don't know on average how much!
Thank you!

Also I'll cut Valerie's MP--she has way too much, even endgame.

Some other suggestions:

Make the characters more niche'd. Make Valerie a cleric, not a paladin as an example. The fights are easy for me because between Valerie dealing 150 damage and the MC dealing 175 damage, I'm raping face. Valerie needs to deal less damage and be the healer and status ailment fixer. Make her gain a skill that cures ailments at level 5 or 6. This way her MP will be useful, then throw in more poison enemies. (Not a LOT more, just a bit more common than now. Actually the only poisoning enemy I encountered so far was the spider boss.)

MC is pretty meh. If he gained a skill that dealt 50% damage to all enemies on screen, that could be useful. Make it cost a lot of MP or something, then add an advanced version that drains all MP but deals 150% damage to all enemies onscreen?

Don't worry, MC will learn some skills as he levels up, then he'll be the most useful character in the game, by far.

As for making Valerie a cleric, that's really not her job; she's supposed to tank. If anything, I think I'll reduce her earlygame damage and overall healing abilities. You get an actual cleric later; Val's the substitute for now.

As for more poison enemies, I think I can do that. More status enemies in general, actually. I think that could help with variety.

Yeah because right now it's just "Enemies that do a little damage" and "Enemies that do a little more damage". Try adding in a spellcaster that freezes time occasionally or something. Like, a weak spellcaster that teams up with other monsters and has a 1/8th chance to freeze time for a turn, and then two turns later on, so you need to kill him before he attacks.

There are actually enemies that do stuff like that, but they come in later. So what I'm thinking is I'll add in some of those unique enemies throughout so players don't lose interest early on.

As for freezing time... Well, there are enemies that paralyze your whole party--that's basically the same thing, right?

15 Re: Legend of the Dragon ACE on Wed Jan 16, 2013 6:47 pm

Klokinator

Yeah that's what I meant, but not paralyzing, just freezing time. Paralyzing seems like an annoying malediction that you have to cure, while freezing time just allows the enemies to get in some free shots.

Hmm, I think I can do something like that. As for where an enemy like that would fit in... I can think of a place, but it's realllyy late in the game. Anyone know any folklore telling of a time-manipulating monster I can jump off of?

I mean like just throw in a weak, low-HP monster in the early game that sometimes freezes time for 1 turn, letting monsters get an extra hit on you. Give it high agility too so it attacks first. Just make sure the chances for slowing time are semi-rare but enough to pose a slight problem.

I went ahead and stickied this thread because it's a really cool game that has lots of potential. Just... try and give it a wittier title eventually?

Hmm, how about instead of Project1...
Project 1! With a space in the middle! Genius!

No you should've seen the title for my RMXP game, it was so poetic~

Lemme see if I can dig it up...

Oh, yeah, ECT:LotMFDoLaD
Spoiler:
Eternal Crystal Tales: Legend of the Magical Fighting Dragons of Light and Dark
Or something like that.

Lol took me a minute to find the game, given that.

But... Yes! That's a laughably generic title, so therefore I present...

The first demo of Legend of the Dragon!
http://www.filedropper.com/lotd
I THINK I fixed all the issues that were brought up recently: Blue Slimeball text, leveling rate, the way the game forces Ryan to leave the top floor of the ruins, and the fact that all earlygame enemies just attacked. I might do some more to differentiate between them, but this should work fairly well, I hope. One thing that I didn't fix in this version is that you can't tell when you use the thief key, though. But don't worry if it seems useless.

You can keep your old save if you really want, but it might be best to start over so your level is more consistent with the new rate.

Lost Forest/Lost Woods. Sorry for my nerdiness, but I had to say it.

Oh lol I see. Wow you're past there already? What level is your party?

And as for the name, it's kinda coincidental since the Lost Forest was actually a sample map that, honestly, I didn't edit a ton. Some, yes, but I didn't make it from scratch.

Made loads of fixes--the game should be much less of a cakewalk now, and a few little annoyances like auto-moving through doors and armor sellers sucking at organizing their goods have been fixed.

Man filedropper's URLs are so great, but is the site itself good for all of you?

It only takes a second to download so it's fine by me. I still prefer mediafire but I've had issues with not being able to download a file no matter how many times I clicked download.

I'll get around to playing this soon.
